Maintaining optimal water quality is crucial for the health and well-being of fish in commercial fisheries. One of the most important items to watch is dissolved oxygen (DO), which can change dramatically, especially during periods of warm weather. This case study examines how a fishery in South Staffordshire successfully averted a crisis using advanced oxygenation technology from Mercia Nanosolutions after more traditional methods failed to maintain oxygen levels.
The challenge
During an unusually warm spell, the manager of a specimen lake in South Staffordshire grew increasingly concerned about declining dissolved oxygen levels (DO). Warm weather is renowned for reducing the solubility of oxygen in water, and as temperatures rose, DO levels in the lake dropped below the ideal range for healthy fish.
Dissolved oxygen should be maintained between 7 and 9 parts per million (ppm) to keep fish stress-free and healthy. Stress begins to manifest in fish when levels fall to around 5 ppm, and levels below 3 ppm are considered dangerous and a significant risk to fish survival. Despite running a traditional aeration system continuously for over a week, the DO levels continued to decline and at one point reached a critical low of 3.2 ppm. With the weather forecast predicting continued high temperatures, the situation wasn’t looking good.
The solution: deploying Nano-Oxy 15-1500
Because of the increasing risk to the fish stock, the fishery team decided to try a Nano-Oxy 15-1500 unit. This advanced device is designed to efficiently dissolve pure oxygen gas into water, providing a rapid boost to DO levels, even under difficult conditions such as in this case.
The Nano-Oxy 15-1500 was set up in the shallow water at the edge of the one-acre specimen lake. It was connected to a cylinder of pure oxygen and set to deliver oxygen at a rate of 15 litres per minute. The team closely monitored dissolved oxygen levels, taking readings every 20 minutes to track the impact of the actions.
Results: rapid and sustained oxygen recovery
The results were almost immediate. Within minutes of activating the Nano-Oxy unit, the team recorded a positive improvement in DO levels close to where the Nano-Oxy unit was. At the next reading, 20 minutes later, increased DO levels were detectable throughout the lake, indicating that the oxygen was diffusing rapidly and evenly across the body of water.
To ensure the long-term health of the lake, oxygenation was maintained at 15 litres per minute for three hours. During this period, the dissolved oxygen rose steadily from the dangerously low 3.2 ppm to a safe and healthy 7.5 ppm. This swift recovery not only halted the immediate threat to the fish but also restored optimal conditions for their ongoing health and growth.
Once the Nano-Oxy unit had been removed and the DO levels were trusted to the original aeration system, results showed that this was sufficient to maintain safe oxygen levels for the fish. This proved that the boost provided by the Nano-Oxy unit had reset the system, allowing normal procedures to resume.
Lessons learned
This case highlights several important points for fisheries management:
- Conventional aeration has limits: While traditional aerators are effective under normal circumstances, there are situations, such as extreme weather, which can overwhelm their capacity to maintain safe oxygen levels.
- Rapid response is critical: Monitoring and acting quickly when DO levels approach dangerous thresholds can prevent fish stress and death and the associated financial loss.
- Advanced technology can make a difference: The Nano-Oxy 15-1500 demonstrated its worth as a rapid-response tool, by restoring oxygen levels quickly and efficiently.
Conclusion
The successful intervention at this South Staffordshire fishery reinforces the importance of both vigilance and innovation in fishery management. By combining careful monitoring with advanced oxygenation technology, the team protected their valuable fish stock during a period of potentially lethal environmental disruption. The Nano-Oxy 15-1500 proved to be a reliable and effective solution, ensuring the long-term health and productivity of the lake.
